A German court order has been issued about Google auto-complete, which is when you put in a search term and it suggests different terms. This can be discriminitory, as in the case when searches for the President's wife's name brought up the word "prostitute". Google claimed it's an automated algorithm and it's not their fault, because no human manipulation is involved. The court said they are indeed responsible for their algorithms, as there are legal implications for offensive results, and ordered Google to clean up its auto complete function. This moves Google closer to being held responsible for some of its content.

The new law in Germany affecting copyright (existing German copyright laws and snippet length) will be in place as of August 1. It will be interesting to see how Google positions itself in regards to that new law. German publishers aren't ready to respond as one body - that may be a year down the road.

There is news from Google that will be official within a week that an opt-in version for publishers will be released for Google news. If you don't opt in you won't be indexed as of August 1. This is going to cause an uproar. It's not public yet so no one knows officially. It's a very aggressive move. People will rant and rave but in the end everyone will opt-in.
